Targeting the exploitation of natural resources, specifically illegal fishing, the coordinated patrol is building greater maritime security cooperation between the Australian and Indonesian defence forces along the two country's shared maritime boundaries. The coordinated patrol is being conducted under the umbrella of Operation Resolute, the Australian Defence Force contribution to the whole-of-government commitment to protect Australia's borders and offshore maritime interests. Indonesia to receive fishing training ship from Spain
Indonesia is to soon receive a fishing training ship from Spains Asturias Gondan yard, the Antara News Agency has reported citing Transportation Minister Freddy Numberi and Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad. A campaign to save the eel, the continent's most threatened common freshwater fish, may be breaking down because French fishermen are exporting too many baby eels to China, British conservationists fear. Statistics New Zealand last week released fish monetary stock accounts showing that fish stocks had risen in financial value by 47 percent since 1996 to reach US$2.8 billion. to view more maritime updates do log on to waves.marinebiztv.com

Maritime Terror
Maritime Terror
Sep 2004 Security analysts are increasingly worried that organisations like Al Qaeda are planning to target commercial shipping. The Malacca strait between Indonesia and Malaysia has long been a haven for pirates. Last year 21 seamen were killed and a further 71 are missing presumed dead following pirate attacks. "We have seen rocket-propelled grenades being fired at the vessel to force it to stop," states Captain Pottengal Mukundan from the International Maritime Bureau. But the biggest fear is of a terrorist attack. "This is a relatively narrow passageway which provides certain operational advantages to the attackers," explains security analyst Brian Jenkins. Mukundan agrees: "You could have a major maritime terrorist incident." The attacks on the USS Cole and The Limburg demonstrate just how vulnerable even warships are to attacks. Analysing the nature of the maritime threat has become a growing industry. But it's not just security analysts taking the threat seriously. Earlier this year, the US suggested sending the marines to patrol the Malacca Strait. The threat was enough to galvanise the Indonesian, Malay and Singaporean navies into action. They're now jointly patrolling the Straits. But whether this will be enough to deter terrorists remains to be seen. Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Security stepped up in Singapore's shipping lanes
Security stepped up in Singapore's shipping lanes
Defence officials in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore have increased sea and air patrols in the Straits of Malacca, after Singapore authorities warned that attacks were being planned in the area's shipping lanes. The latest threat was said to target an oil tanker, but few details have been given. The Malacca Strait is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Half the world's oil is transported through it and hundreds of vessels pass through every day. The shipping route is highly vulnerable, as a bottleneck of just 2.7km leaves little room for ships to manoeuvre or gather speed. According to security analysts, the region is well-placed to detect and deter any threat, but doubts remain over whether maritime authorities would be able to thwart an attack without air and land support. Al Jazeera's Laura Kyle reports from Singapore (09 Mar 2010).

India & ASEAN: Indonesia
India & ASEAN: Indonesia
Indonesia is one of the fast growing countries in South East Asia. Both the countries have been partners in many projects, among the most significant being the hydrographic survey. Maritime trade that many ancient Indian empires shared with Indonesia has influenced the latter culturally. Hindu temples are one evident example. Art in Indonesia is also greatly influenced by Indian mythology. Ramayana is widely performed, and is one of the popular stories for Wayang, the shadow puppet shows. Although the largest Muslim country in the world, the religious tolerance of Indonesia is the prime reason for the preservation of art and architecture that has come down from Hindu, Christian and Buddhist faiths.

Australia / Indonesia: Afghan Asylum Seekers Protest Being Picked Up By Indonesian Authorities
MERAK, Indonesia: Around 120 asylum seekers demanded on Tuesday that Indonesia provide a vessel to allow them to continue to Australia, refusing to leave a tanker that rescued them at sea, an official said. The tanker sailing from Australia to Singapore picked up the asylum seekers, all men and mostly Afghans and some Iranians, in Indonesian waters on Sunday. "Until now, the asylum seekers are still refusing to get off the tanker before their requests are fulfilled," said Yanuar, an immigration official in Indonesia's Cilegon city, where the boat is docked at the port of Merak. "They requested that Indonesia facilitate their journey to Australia, and provide a vessel to get there," said the official, who goes by one name. "We gave them food last night (Monday), but we haven't assessed their health condition yet," said Banten province maritime police chief Budi Hermawan. The Singapore-flagged MT Hermia rescued the asylum seekers from a sinking wooden vessel in the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra islands, and took them to Merak. Some of the men cried and screamed hysterically on Monday as Indonesian police and immigration officials boarded the tanker and tried to pull some off the vessel. Some of the men said on Monday they would refuse to disembark unless they were granted asylum in Australia. In 2009, more than 200 Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers refused to get off a boat docked at Merak in a six-month standoff with Indonesian authorities, demanding to go to ...

Arrests at Sea Raise Tensions With Malaysia Nurfika Osman | August 16, 2010 Tensions between Malaysia and Indonesia are heating up again following the arrest of three Indonesian maritime officers over an apparent border dispute. The three officers were in Bintan waters off Riau Islands when they were arrested on Friday night by the Malaysian Marine Operations Force, according to Aji Sularso, the director general of supervision at the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. He said the officers were arrested shortly after detaining seven Malaysian fishermen who were part of a group aboard five boats illegally fishing in Indonesian waters. "Malaysia said that it was their territory, but they are our waters," Aji insisted on Sunday. The three had been part of a five-strong patrol team when they encountered the fishermen. Two officers took seven of the fishermen to Sekupang, Batam, while three boarded the fishing boats, where they were arrested. Malaysian state news agency Bernama has reported that the incident took place in Kota Tinggi waters, off the southeastern coast of Johor state. "The incident occurred about 9:30 pm when the 15 fishermen, between the ages of 23 and 63, were four nautical miles south-east of Tanjung Punggai [in Johor] before they were approached by an Indonesian fisheries enforcement boat and detained," Kota Tinggi Police Supt.
